Food Allergies

It appears I have oral allergy syndrome. Now, I'm not a hypochondriac, quite the opposite. I steadfastly refuse to believe there's anything wrong with me unless I have unassailable truth. However, over the last 5 years or so, my reactions to certain foods have increased and escalated. I can't ignore them - it's difficult to ignore incessant itching and swelling in your mouth and throat.

I underwent allergy testing as a teenager, little injections of known allergens under your skin. If they swell, you're allergic. I think I was diagnosed with cat and pollen allergies. Allergy immunotherapy was the treatment. I'm pretty sure it didn't work, because I'm still allergic to my cat, as well as most green growing things, especially ones with flowers. Thank God my cat doesn't flower.

Then in my late 20s, I started having food allergies. Avocado, cantaloupe, walnuts, pineapple, watermelon. Who in the hell is allergic to watermelon? It's mostly water, for God's sake! But, yeah, lucky me.

Damn conformational epitopes.

Oh, that's a bummer.

Hey Kitt -
Bummer, but it's not too bad. I still eat avocado preceded by a Benadryl :-) If I ever develop a shellfish allergy, however...that'll be a problem!

Oh noes, you're in San Marcos and you're allergic to avocadoes?
Thanks for dropping by my blorg. I'll bookmark yours.

Hey cc -
Ironic, isn't it? There's a grove (farm? orchard?) about 2 miles from me. I blame my midwestern blood.

That sucks. I remember you breaking into a rash just holding a cantaloupe.

Hey WC -
You read way back then? I'm touched.
And I still remember that little bastard...he was tasty :-)

Oh, that is no fun. My husband has a ton of environmental allergies but I'm so glad he doesn't have any food ones

Hey Kat -
Allergies of any kind suck. :)

I'm allergic to fresh cut pineapple. (Canned is okay) Normally, my tongue and lips swell a little, but once I ate so much my lips perforated and and I was bleeding. And this was at work... You think we're related?

I try to click over after someone leaves a comment. So whatever you commented on around when you posted about it. I remember that incident though because I'll eat cantaloupe, but I wouldn't suffer through a rash for it.

Hey Desco :)
Related? Nah, couldn't be.
How's Kitty? And the newer one...Frank?

Fred. That was his previous owners' name for him. We named him Egypt because he was scrawny and looked like a caracal or something out of a hieroglyph. But he got big once we started feeding him, and he's too goofy for that name, so we stuck with what we were calling him from the beginning "Buddy".

Incidentally, fresh pineapple and walnuts are the only things I have a problem with. Not avocados, watermelon, cantaloupe, or celery.

Argh! What have you done to me!? I made and ate guacamole yesterday, and my tongue swelled like I ate a bowl of walnuts!
