Morbier Cheese

I picked up a wedge of Morbier cheese at BevMo the other day. It sounded vaguely familiar, but I knew I'd never had it. When I got home, I Google'd it, and saw that I had previously visited the page for Morbier on that oracle of knowledge, Wikipedia. In summary, Wiki says it's stinky with a tasteless layer of ash in between. Here's a review on Irregular Times (which I don't 100% agree with), if you're interested.

Woah! Is it stinky! Honestly, my first impression was moldy bath towels. Hubby said it smelled like a foot. But surprisingly, the stinky doesn't carry over into the taste. It's very tangy, but creamy and smooth. (Sorry, I don't know all the hip cheese-words.) Even Hubby liked it when I force-fed him a bit. Very nice on a plain cracker. It would probably be good with some fig or onion jam on top. Alas, I was jamless.

Would I buy it again? You betcha.

Interesting. Too bad my girlfriend doesn't really eat cheese, or else I might grab some. But I almost never get to buy fancy cheese, it goes bad before I can eat it all.

Hey Bob - My Hubby doesn't eat cheese either, until I convince him to have it at room temp on a cracker. A lot of cheese-dislikers can be swayed that way :)

Not a stinky cheese fan myself, I can't even stand blue cheese! Reminds me of Vosges chocolate shop in NYC. They have the most incredible creations, but one in particular was called something like "The Stinky Cheese Tower". It was a cone-shaped dark chocolate truffle filled with a stinky cheese. My mother and I knew my dad would like it but we asked how stinky it was and her response was "very stinky". We stayed clear but he thoroughly enjoyed it!

Hey PBBoy - I love stinky cheese, but please, not with chocolate. Bacon goes with chocolate :)

I heart stinky cheese, and will definitely try this. You should try tellagio from Italy sometime, but be sure to get a whole milk version. I don't think it's as stinky as this sounds, but it's sooooo good.
